Aberdeen is commonly referred to variously as "the Granite City", or the "Silver City" on account of the grey, occasionally sparkling building stone used in older buildings in the city; and the "Flower of Scotland", Aberdeen long having been famous for outstanding parks, gardens and floral displays. It is now also important for oil and stands on a bay of the North Sea, between the mouths of the rivers Don and Dee. It is filled with historic buildings and has some of the oldest university buildings in the country and the surrounding countryside is dotted with historic houses, stately homes and castles.
Historic places to visit in Aberdeen
A variety of museums attractions in the city tell the tales of the city, its people, its maritime history and some of the great (and often sinister) stories of the surrounding glens. And if you have your fill of the impressive and sparkly granite architecture across the city then the all-encompassing gallery may provide a change of scenery. There are numerous historic sites to visit within a short distance of the city.
Historic Aberdeen accommodation, Aberdeen bed and breakfasts (B&Bs) and Aberdeen hotels
The more historic hotels and bed and breakfasts will be towards the centre but there are a decent range of hotels throughout the city along with more rural hotels and B&Bs to stay at within easy reach of the city. Overall, there is a good range of bed and breakfast accommodation.
