Accommodation and travel ideas in Borders
The Borders of Scotland, located between Edinburgh to the north and Northumberland to the south (and a little further south, Newcastle), run broadly east-west following the line of the river Tweed. Berwick-upon-Tweed is actually in England (having swapped ownership several times!) but is considered a Border town. It is a region with rich farmland and interesting countryside, that is dotted with signs of the ancient keeps and fortifications that helped divide the English from the Scots. Today, this is a peaceful and largely unspoilt rural area with many large and interesting historic houses and gardens, several of which are open to the public. Towns include Galashiels, Selkirk, Duns, Greenlaw, Hawick, and Coldstream. The gems are Kelso and St Boswells, both pretty and historic market towns with ruined Abbeys.
Historic Borders places to visit
The region is famed for having no less than four Abbeys to visit in the area as well as being home and burial place of Sir Walter Scott, a fact that has encouraged a number of visitor attractions. There are a large number of historic houses and gardens to visit throughout the area along with many ancient defensive towers and keeps. The eastern parts are famed for its attractive coast and golf courses.
Historic Borders bed and breakfast hotel accommodation in the Scottish Borders
The more historic hotels and bed and breakfast accommodation tends to be towards the centre of the older towns and cities. For those that prefer rural locations then there are many hotels and B&Bs in the smaller towns and villages throughout the region.
