Cambridgeshire was formed from the historic county of Cambridge, together with the former county of Huntingdonshire, the Isle of Ely and the Soke of Peterborough with Cambridge being the county town. The county boasts three cities with the University city of Cambridge, the Fen city of Ely and Peterborough alongside large towns such as Huntingdon. Many of the attractions throughout the county are related to the Fens and its unique ecological and historical situation, although there are many historic houses, gardens and buildings to visit. The long-standing collegiate university in Cambridge is a famous visitor attraction and one of the smallest cities in the country, Ely, has had a very individual but important part to play in British history and the Civil War.
Historic places to visit in Cambridgeshire
Apart from the famous university and the Fens there are many attractions such as the airbase at Duxford, with frequent airshows, Cathedrals in the cities and various historic houses and their gardens. On the edge of the county is Newmarket, the centre of British Horseracing, with museums and two racecourses.

The more historic hotels and bed and breakfast accommodation tends to be towards the centre of the older towns. For those that prefer rural locations then there are many hotels, pubs and B&Bs in the smaller towns and villages throughout the area.
