Accommodation and travel ideas in Canterbury
Lying on the River Stour in Kent this city is famous for the Archbishop of the same name being the head of the Anglican Church worldwide. It has also become a Christian pilgrimage after the murder of Thomas Becket in the Cathedral in 1170. It has Celtic origins and there also existed a Roman settlement on the site. Even though it was bombed relentlessly during the Second World War many ancient buildings survived and modern development within the medieval town centre is strictly regulated.
Historic places to visit in Canterbury
Despite the bombing, many historic attractions including a city wall founded in Roman times and rebuilt in the 14th century, the ruins of St Augustine's Abbey and a Norman castle, and allegedly the oldest school in England, The King's School. There are also a host of museums and galleries throughout the city.
