The English cathedral and historical fortress city of Carlisle located in Cumbria, is at the northern end of the Lake District and 10 miles from the Scottish border. The city has Roman routes and has been a fortress since being near Hadrian's Wall and always being a border point whether when in Scotland or England.

Carlisle has a compact, historic centre, including a castle, museum, cathedral, and semi-intact city walls. The former law courts or citadel towers which now serve as offices for Cumbria County Council are also of architectural interest. The nearby Lake District has stunning views and many historic houses within easy access of the city.
