In the north-west of England lies Cheshire, or the County of Chester as it used to be known, which is a predominantly rural county despite being bordered by both Merseyside and Manchester to the north. As such it is famous for its countryside and largely unspoilt landscapes. The historic roman city of Chester (Deva) is a popular tourist destination because of the attraction of its ancient city walls, amphitheatres and Mediaeval & Tudor buildings. Cheshire is historically famous for the production of cheese, salt and the weaving of silk. There many examples of settlements throughout the ages from pre-historic burial grounds and Roman forts to timber built buildings that survive intact.

Historic places to visit in Cheshire

There are examples of different ages throughout the county, most notably with the Romans in Chester, and many have museums connected to the attractions themselves. As this has always been the affluent rural area close to Liverpool and Manchester, there are many large country houses and gardens open to visitors.

Historic Cheshire bed and breakfasts (B&Bs) and hotel accommodation in Cheshire

The more historic hotels and bed and breakfast accommodation tends to be towards the centre of the older towns. For those that prefer rural locations then there are many hotels, pubs and B&Bs in the smaller towns and villages throughout the area.
