As such it is famous for its countryside and largely unspoilt landscapes. The historic roman city of Chester (Deva) is a popular tourist destination because of the attraction of its ancient city walls, amphitheatres and Mediaeval & Tudor buildings. Cheshire is historically famous for the production of cheese, salt and the weaving of silk. There many examples of settlements throughout the ages from pre-historic burial grounds and Roman forts to timber built buildings that survive intact.

Historic places to visit in Cheshire

There are examples of different ages throughout the county, most notably with the Romans in Chester, and many have museums connected to the attractions themselves. As this has always been the affluent rural area close to Liverpool and Manchester, there are many large country houses and gardens open to visitors.
