Chester, although founded in 79AD as the Roman city of Castra, is actually considered to one of the prime examples of an English medieval city - even though a large amount of the architecture is now Victorian. This historical diversity makes the county town of Cheshire a very worthwhile place to see, with one of its main attractions being its city walls which are not only Grade 1 listed but also the most complete in Britain.
Historic places to visit in Chester
The unique attractions of this city are the almost fully complete medieval walls, the special and quirky "rows" and the Pevsner's distinctive Victorian "black and white" revival architecture. Other places to visit include the cathedral dating back to Norman times, other ancient churches and the many Roman finds and museums.
Historic Chester bed and breakfasts (B&Bs) and hotel accommodation in Chester
The more historic hotels and bed and breakfasts will be towards the centre but there are a decent range of hotels throughout the city along with more rural hotels and B&Bs to stay at within easy reach of the city. Overall, there is a good range of bed and breakfast accommodation.
