Derbyshire is located in the East Midlands and although it borders with Greater Manchester is actually a fairly rural and historic area, containing parts of the Peak District National Park, the Pennines and the National Forest. There has been human activity in the area dating back to the Stone Age but it is from the Roman era that there is a lot of evidence, with forts throughout the county after they discovered the lead ore in the hills. After the industrial revolution in the local metropolises there was a spate of stunning country houses being built or modified, many of which survive today as visitor attractions.
Historic places to visit in Derbyshire
There are many large and impressive country houses throughout the county with ones such as Chatsworth and Kedleston being architecturally world famous attractions. There are Roman ruins throughout the area and there famous spa towns such as Buxton to visit. The county is very rural with many ancient land formations such as the park at the Heights of Abraham with many other attractions within it and a cable car transporting visitors from Matlock.

The more historic hotels and bed and breakfast accommodation tends to be towards the centre of the older towns. For those that prefer quieter rural locations then there are many hotels, pubs and B&Bs in the smaller towns and villages throughout the area.
