Accommodation and travel ideas in Durham

Durham, a cathedral city with a fine Norman Castle, dating from 1073 (currently a college of Durham University and the oldest student accommodation in the world) is fortified by a tight loop of the River Wear. Bill Bryson, in Notes from a Small Island said of the place, "Why, it's a perfect little city. If you have never been to Durham, go there at once. Take my car. It's wonderful."

Historic places to visit in Durham

The attractions in and around the castle and the cathedral are the most historic and there are a range of informative tours. As well as visit these places it is certainly worth walking along the Wear to understand the magnitude of the place before taking in one of the museums, galleries or botanical gardens. Nearby Beamish is an easily accessible famous attraction.

Historic Durham bed and breakfasts (B&Bs) and hotel accommodation in Durham

The more historic hotels and bed and breakfasts are nearer the castle or viaduct but there are others hotels in the other bits of the city along with more rural hotels and B&Bs to stay at within easy reach of the city. The accommodation of Newcastle and Gateshead are just a short train ride to the north. Overall, there is a good range of bed and breakfast accommodation.
