Accommodation and travel ideas in Ely
The third smallest city in England is built on a chalk hill that is now only surrounded by land rather than water since the Fens were drained. This natural defence helped made it the last stronghold of Anglo-Saxon resistance. It is famous not only for its position in the Fens but also its cathedral and being Oliver Cromwell's home and therefore of huge importance in the Civil War.
Historic places to visit in Ely
The major attractions are based around these three sources of fame; the Cathedral with its roots back in the 7th century is a pull for visitors along with the Oliver Cromwell's house and the museum that informs so much on the Civil War and life at the time. The Fens also form part of nature reserves and wildlife visitor centres.
Historic Ely bed and breakfasts (B&Bs) and hotel accommodation in Ely
The more historic hotels and bed and breakfasts will be towards the centre but there are a decent range of hotels throughout the city along with more hotels and B&Bs to stay at other towns and villages within easy reach of the city. Cambridge is not far away. Overall, there is a good range of bed and breakfast accommodation.
