Essex, in spite of its proximity to London has many rural areas due to the Green Belt, Epping Forest and the areas to the north and east surrounding Colchester, Harwich, Chelmsford and Saffron Walden, where the county is rural, with many small towns, villages and hamlets largely built in the traditional materials of timber and brick, with clay tile or thatched roofs. The ancient town of Great Dunmow is certainly of local renown.
Historic places to visit in Essex
The historic areas are away from the edges of London and its greenbelt and are to the north and east. Colchester has a Roman and military past and even claims to be the oldest town in Britain whilst Chelmsford is the county town with a Catehdral.

The more historic hotels and bed and breakfast accommodation tends to be towards the centre of the older towns. For those that prefer quieter rural locations then there are many hotels, pubs and B&Bs in the smaller towns and villages throughout the area. London is very close so day trips are certainly possible.
