Exeter differs from most cities in the UK by having relatively low growth in the Industrial Revolution and its importance as a seaport and ship canal was drastically lessened with the age of steam. As such its architecture that survived a bombing in 1942 is from a very different age to many other large towns. It boasts a stunning cathedral, historic civic and political buildings and a host of medieval churches.

Exeter should be a treat for fans of religious attractions and architecture with Exeter Cathedral, six medieval churches and a priory. The Guildhall claims to be the oldest in Britain still serving its original purpose and that Parliament Street is the world's narrowest. There are museums worth a visit along with the Historic Quayside.
