Hertford is one of the Home Counties and although its county town is Hertford, it also has the historic cathedral city of St Albans and other older towns such as Royston, Ware and Baldock. More famously perhaps are the global examples of town planning of the earlier 20th century namely Letchworth Garden City and Welwyn Garden City. Despite its proximity to London and containing major commuter towns it is a predominantly rural county and the pre-eminence of deer in the county's crest can still be justified today.
Historic places to visit in Hertfordshire
There are roman and Anglo-Saxon influences throughout the county but the points of greatest interest throughout the county lie in the historic houses, estates and gardens including the place where Queen Elizabeth I spent much of her childhood. St Albans houses a magnificent cathedral but also Iron Age and Roman remains. In the more rural parts of the county there are many smaller towns and villages with attractive parish churches.
Historic Hertfordshire bed and breakfasts (B&Bs) and hotel accommodation in Hertfordshire
The more historic hotels and bed and breakfast accommodation tends to be towards the centre of the older towns. For those that prefer quieter rural locations then there are many hotels, pubs and B&Bs in the smaller towns and villages throughout the area. London is near enough to do a day trip
