The Isle of Man is part of the British Isles but not the United Kingdom. It is a Crown Dependency, with its own parliament, Tynwald. Established by the Vikings, Tynwald is the oldest continuous parliament in Europe, having celebrated its own millennium in 1979. Douglas, the Island’s capital, is the main centre of population. The other significant settlements are: Onchan (east), Peel (west), Ramsey (north), Castletown (south), Port Erin (south) and Port St Mary (south). The Island’s finance sector is now its largest employer, followed by the manufacturing industry, although traditional sectors such as agriculture still play a significant role. It's attraction includes 100 mile coastline with expansive sands and bustling harbours and dramatic headlands.
Historic places to visit on the Isle of Man
The imposing medieval fortress of Castle Rushen, which gave Castletown its name, stands sentinel over the historic harbour and quay. Visit the House of Manannan and Peel Castle. At the geographical heart of the island is the village of St John's, the historical home of Tynwald, the Manx parliament with its famous four-tiered grass hill.
Historic Isle of Man accommodation, bed and breakfast, (B&B's) and Isle of Man hotels
The more historic hotels and bed and breakfasts will be in the main towns but there are a decent range of hotels throughout the isle along with more rural hotels and B&Bs to stay at. Overall, there is a good range of bed and breakfast accommodation.
