Accommodation and travel ideas in Lake District
The Lake District, situated to the south and west of Penrith in Cumbria, is the largest national park in the country at 885 sq. miles and boasts 241 fells, 16 lakes, 53 tarns and several "waters". Many of the towns in the area are of the same name as a nearby lake, such as Grasmere and Windermere, whereas others are away from the water and major tourist centres such as Keswick and Ambleside. The region dates back to the Stone Age and its geographical isolation has preserved a lot of the culture, dialect and landscape. It has been the muse and inspiration for writers such as William Wordsworth, Jhn Ruskin, Alfred Wainwright and Beatrix Potter.
Historic places to visit in the Lake District
The major attractions of the area are the Lakes and the fells but to go with that there are many none scenic attractions that inform on the history of this ancient place. There are trips on steamers on many of the lakes and old steam railways in between various destinations. On the edge of the Lakes there are various historic house and ancient battlements surviving as a reminder that this area has often been the western end of the frontier between England and Scotland

The more historic hotels and bed and breakfast accommodation tends to be towards the centre of the older towns and cities. For those that prefer rural locations then there are many hotels, B&Bs and pubs in the smaller towns and villages throughout the country, with dedicated hiker accommodation in the mountainous regions.
