Giving the county its name, Lanark is a market town situated in South Lanarkshire. With an Award Winning Visitor Centre and New Lanark World Heritage Site.
Historic places to visit in Lanark
The historic burgh of Lanark was the location of the first meeting of the Scots Parliament in 978. Today it is one of the important towns in The Clyde Valley and has a bustling market. Lanark Market is one of Scotland's largest farming markets.
A few hundred years after the first Scots Parliament took place in Lanark, William Braveheart Wallace resided in the town. There are tributes to Wallace's fight for freedom in Lanark.
At the visitor centre visitors can explore what life would have been like for the 18th Century inhabitants of New Lanark which rose to fame in the early 1800's when Robert Own was manage of the mill. Two of the most popular attractions at the centre are the Millennium Experience ride and an audio-visual theatre show called Annie McLeod's Story which tells the history of the region through the ghost of a mill girl.
Visit Bothwell Castle which is the largest and finest 13th Century stone castle in Scotland overlooking the River Clyde. There are plenty of museums to visit in the town.
