The traditional county town of Lancashire, to which it gives its name, Lancaster is deemed the gateway to the Lake District and Morecambe. Lancaster is linked to the British monarchy through the House of Lancaster and that the Duchy of Lancaster holds large estates on behalf of Queen Elizabeth, who herself is also the Duke of Lancaster. The city is built over the original Roman garrison.
