Liverpool, although dating back to the reign of King John, really rose as a powerful city in the revolution in trade and by the start of the 19th century 40% of world trade was passing through Liverpool. This was the economic boost that triggered much of the architecture, with the waterfront now a World Heritage Site attraction, with more public sculpture than all UK cities bar Westminster, more listed buildings than any other city outside London and even more Georgian houses than Bath. It shows prime examples of, amongst others, Ellis, Gilbert Scott and Luteyns. This, combined with its promising and vibrant future has helped Liverpool become the European City of Culture 2008.

The docks and waterfront are definitely worth a visit as they are now a World Heritage Site and feature the attractions of the impressive Royal Liver, Cunard and the Port of Liverpool Buildings. There are numerous places of worship reflecting the diverse cultural and religious mix that went with a trading history. There also 2500 listed buildings to admire and many museums to visit to really understand this city's varied but fascinating history.
