Accommodation and travel ideas in Lothian
There are three Lothians, East Lothian, West Lothian, and Mid Lothian, and they centre around Scotland's capital, Edinburgh, whilst also featuring many other historic towns such as North Berwick, Dalkeith, Dunbar, Linlithgow, Haddington and the villages of Roslin and Aberlady. The Lothians are all south of Edinburgh and the Firth of Forth and stretch to the North Sea coast in the east with the Borders region to the south. The region has varied and unstable history with many influences, and was one of the few parts of Scotland to become so anglicised - indeed it was once referred to by Adam of Dryburgh as the "Land of the English in the Kingdom of the Scots."
Historic places to visit in the Lothians
Edinburgh is the main attraction of the Lothians with its ancient, fortified and Royal heritage drawing in many thousands of visitors each year. The coast is covered in attractive towns and villages and increasingly only separated by manicured Links golf courses. There are also fortifications and castle ruins such as Tantallon that looks out towards the bird reserve of the Bass Rock. The village of Roslin has an ancient chapel connected to the story of the Holy Grail and there are many villages with market squares, parish churches and distinctively Lothian pubs.
Historic bed and breakfasts (B&Bs) and hotel accommodation in the Lothians
The more historic hotels and bed and breakfast accommodation tends to be towards the centre of the older towns. For those that prefer quieter rural locations then there are many hotels, pubs and B&Bs in the smaller towns and villages throughout the area.
