Madrid is the capital of Spain and is the third largest municipality in the European Union, after Greater London and Berlin. The city is located on the river Manzanares and sits right in the centre of both the country itself and the Community of Madrid, which is comprised of the city of Madrid and all its numerous suburbs. As the capital city, seat of government, and residence of the Spanish monarch, Madrid is also seen as the political centre of Spain. Due to its commercial output, its excellent standard of living and its market size, Madrid is considered the financial centre of the Iberian Peninsula.
Historic Places to Visit in Madrid
Despite its rather modern infrastructure, it has preserved the historic look and atmosphere of many of its neighbourhoods and streets. Its most famous landmarks include the huge Royal Palace of Madrid, the Royal Theater (Teatro Real), the Buen Retiro park, founded in 1631, the impressive 19th-century National Library building, which contains a great amount of Spain's historical writings, an archaeological museum and three world-renowned art museums: the Prado Museum, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum.
