The North York moors are one of the largest expanses of heather moorland in the United Kingdom, contained within the smallest national park in England. On the north and south the moors are etched by deep valleys, or dales, and the eastern boundary of the park ends in a spectacular coastline.
There are many towns and villages well worth a visit located in and around the North York Moors National Park including Helmsley, Pickering, Ryedale, Rosedale, Rievaulx Abbey, Mount Grace Priory, Hutton-le-Hole, Thornton-le-Dale and Goathland.
The best thing about visiting the Moors are the walks: the Cleveland Way, Lyke Wake Walk are amongst the best known and most spectacular.
Whilst beautiful at all times of year, the park is at its best in August and September, when the purple heather is in bloom.

The more hotels and bed and breakfast accommodation tends to be towards Scarborough and Whitby, but through this website you have access to properties scattered throughout the countryside as well. For those that prefer rural locations then there are many hotels, pubs and B&Bs in the smaller towns and villages throughout the county. Alternatively, you could use the ancient walled City of York as your starting point for a day trip.
