Northumberland, stretching from Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the south up to the Scottish Borders in the north, is home to many oft-contested and historic market or ford towns such as Berwick upon Tweed, Alnwick, Hexham, Amble, Morpeth and Rothbury. The county features a long and dramatic coast to the east, moorland to west and Roman ruins in the south. The area has been fought over by the Scots and English throughout the centuries and Berwick upon Tweed changed hands many times. This mentality still permeates the county and features in many local celebrations. The county is predominantly rural and features both the rolling moorland of the Cheviots and coastal castles of Lindisfarne and Bamburgh.

Historic places to visit in Northumberland

Due to its violent past there are a very high number of castles and forts to visit throughout the county with prime examples being on the coast and at Alnwick. With its coast becoming a greater tourist destination there are an increasing amount of attractions starting up in towns all over the county. Outside of the market, ford or castellated towns there is stunning scenery and pretty villages to be enjoyed up in the hills.
