Historically, Portsmouth has always been an important naval port and its heritage is evident with many memorials, museums, trails, the fascinating Historic Dockyard and other attractions. Portsmouth has four miles of seafront (including pebbled beaches) and the distinctive Spinnaker Tower. Most of the city is on the Portsea Island and is close to the Isle of Wight and Southampton.
Historic places to visit
Portsmouth's major attraction is its long and distinguished naval and maritime history and there are plenty of attractions on the seafront to entertain you. There are museums on the wars that Portsmouth played a part in, and for those looking for earlier history and architecture then there are two cathedrals and the castle. Try the Spinnaker Tower to spot what you would like to visit first.
Historic places to stay
The more historic hotels and bed and breakfasts will be towards the castle and the seafront but there are a decent range of hotels throughout the city along with more rural hotels and B&Bs to stay at within easy reach of the city.
