Roxburghshire lies in the South of Scotland next to England and Dumfriesshire and includes the towns of Kelso, on the River Tweed, Hawick and Jedburgh. Newcastleton Forest offers a truly wonderful way to immerse yourself in the unique Scottish countryside. This Forestry Commission woodland has mature conifers to be enjoyed.
Roxburghshire historic places to visit
Visit the Liddesdale Heritage Centre Museum, which houses a large collection of historical artefacts with facilities for genealogical research. A rare and unique exhibit is the commemorative bi-centenary tapestry, created by local needle workers. Of special interest is a collection of Waverley Line railway memorabilia, ideal for all the family.
At Hermitage Castle a vast and eerie ruin, dating from 14th and 15th centuries, is associated with the de Soulis, the Douglases and Mary Queen of Scots. It was partly restored in the 19th century and is ripe for visitor exploration. Nearby is the equally fascinating 14th-century Hermitage Chapel.
The ruins of Roxburgh Castle set at the confluence of the River Tweed and Teviot Water are a must for visitors.
Instrumental in Hawick's success in winning Scotland in Bloom 16 times. Hawick Walled Gardens feature annual and herbaceous borders and glasshouse displays.
