The Borders' hills, towers, rivers and keeps defend its heather clad moorland leading down to its two great industrial, historical and cultural cities. Through Stirling, the gateway to the Highlands and you just cannot be prepared enough for the breathtaking wilderness of the glens, lochs and mountains of the Highlands. Many famous poets found their muse here, and others did so on the coasts and islands whose swollen seas hold the secrets of bandits, Norse raiders and an ancient way of life.

Whilst there are many decent hotels in the historical and cultural centres of the major towns and cities, there is always the more relaxed option of B&Bs and hotels in the more rural surrounding areas. For those who really want to get away from it all there are many cottages for rent scattered across the more remote parts of the up-land areas.

The ancient parts of Edinburgh and Glasgow's regenerative vibrancy are always high on people's list, but if you head down towards the Borders then the many opulent houses and defensive keeps are not to be missed. The coast offers a wide range from the famous ports that once drove the country's industry, to long sandy beaches aligned with famous links golf courses, and further north where castles were once used to repel raiders now invite visitors to come in. In the Highlands, keep your eyes peeled for deer, eagles and Nessie before heading to a world famous distillery for a dram or two of the 'water of life'.
