The South Downs is an area of chalk downland in southern England, culminating in the cliffs at Beachy Head. Much of the Downs will be included in the future South Downs National Park. Two areas of the Downs have been designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB); there are many Sites of Special Scientific Interest.
Historic South Downs places to visit
There are many castles and historic houses in the area along with their associated gardens that people can visit and appreciate their attractive settings. No visit to the South Downs is complete without a walk along the downs themselves: the principal bridleway, and longest of them, is the South Downs Way. Two of the landmarks on the Downs are the Long Man of Wilmington, a chalk carved figure, and Clayton Windmills. There is also a war memorial, The Chattri, dedicated to Indian soldiers who died in the Brighton area, having been brought there for treatment after being injured fighting on the Western Front in the First World War. You could also consider a trip to the world-famous opera at Glyndebourne, near the 14th century village of Alfriston.
Historic South Downs bed and breakfasts and hotel accommodation near the South Downs
The more historic hotels and bed and breakfast accommodation tends to be towards the centre of the older towns. For those that prefer quieter rural locations then there are many hotels, pubs and B&Bs in the smaller towns and villages throughout the area. The Star at Alfriston, and Dean's Place hotel, just outside Alfriston, are two good examples.
