Southampton: bed and breakfast accommodation

Southampton known as Clausentum in Roman times (the ruins still exist) and Hamwic in Saxon times. Its privileged position on England's south coast made it Britain's premier trading post. The town was walled in the medieval era, evidence of which remains. Southampton was devastated by bombing during the Second World War, which means that some of the older heritage stands alongside a lot more modern constructions.

Historic places to visit in Southampton

Its position of being on the coast means that there is a large naval and maritime attraction to the town but the medieval heritage plays an important part and visitors can follow the signposted original course of the historic town walls, gatehouses and towers, which are amongst the most complete in England and includes the famous Bargate gatehouse.

Historic Southampton bed and breakfasts (B&Bs) and hotel accommodation in Southampton

The more historic hotels and bed and breakfasts will be towards the centre but there are a decent range of hotels throughout the city along with more rural hotels and B&Bs to stay at within easy reach of the city.
