This cathedral city in Hertfordshire was the Catuvellauni settlement of Verlamio, then renamed and developed by the Romans as Verulamium. There are still visits to many Roman ruins and mosaics throughout the city. The Cathedral, originally founded as the Abbey Church of the monastery on the site, is built partially of stones taken from the old Roman town. Its English name is derived from the first English Christian Martyr and it was in the Abbey that the first draft of the Magna Carta was signed.
Historic place to visit in St Albans
The Cathedral and Abbey Church are major attractions with the latter boasting the longest true nave in Britain. There are numerous museums of its history, Roman influence and a medieval clock tower. The mixed nature of its history and architecture with its proximity to London make it a worthwhile visit.
