Suffolk, with its county town of Ipswich, has no cities but is also home to other historic towns such as Bury St Edmonds, Newmarket, Sudbury, Woodbridge and the village of Lavenham. Suffolk is a fairly flat county bordered by Norfolk to the north, Essex to the South and Cambridgeshire to the West with the rest on the coast. Whilst the wetlands of The Broads are famous in their own right, The Suffolk Coast and Heaths have been recognised as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Suffolk claims to be one of the most ancient of counties with evidence of settlement dating back to the Mesolithic age and the Monastery in Bury St Edmonds being one of the oldest inhabited dwellings in the country.

Historic places to visit in Suffolk

Towns such as Bury St Edmonds and Lavenham have very ancient centres and religious architecture to admire on your visit whilst there are attractions in the countryside that tell more of this county's ancient past such as at Sutton Hoo. There are more castles and ruins throughout the county along with historic country houses and gardens. Lavenham is an impressive and well preserved mediaeval village that has become a popular attraction. Many of the numerous market towns have attractive parish churches.
