Historic places to visit in Sussex

The history of Sussex is largely found in the position it has held as a first line of defence for England and castles have guarded three important entries from the coast through the South Downs into the interior provided by the valleys of the Adur (Bramber) and the Arun (Arundel). The latter remains the most imposing and the seat of the Duke of Norfolk. There are many other battlements and ruins throughout the entire county, along with some historic houses and gardens.
