West Sussex, is roughly based round the ancient Kingdom of Sussex and features many famous and historic towns and cities including Chichester and Arundel. The county is bounded on the north by Surrey, east by Kent, south by the English Channel and west by Hampshire. The area has a long history of defending entry inland via the South Downs from the coast and as such there are many castles, moated sites and ruins throughout the county

Historic places to visit in West Sussex

The history of West Sussex is largely found in the position it has held as a first line of defence for England and castles have guarded three important entries from the coast through the South Downs into the interior provided by the valleys of the Adur (Bramber) and the Arun (Arundel). The latter remains the most imposing and the seat of the Duke of Norfolk. There are many other battlements and ruins throughout the entire county, along with some historic houses and gardens.
