Wiltshire's most famous settlement is the city of Salisbury with its fantastic Cathedral but there are many more historic counties throughout the county such as Calne, Devizes, Marlborough, Westbury, Warminster and Trowbridge. Wiltshire contains large areas of rolling chalk downland and grazing farmland, including Salisbury Plain which is now mainly used by the Army. Wiltshire is probably most famous due to its extremely important neolithic monuments, including the stone circles at Stonehenge and Avebury, and the former settlement of Old Sarum. The county is landlocked and borders the counties of Dorset, Somerset, Hampshire, Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire.

The county has various stone age artefacts and monuments that are some of the main attractions but there are many other reasons to visit Wiltshire. The county has fantastic rolling countryside that holds many picturesque villages and towns with the churches, historic homes and gardens which often go hand in hand. The city of Salisbury is particularly historic.
