The historic city of Winchester at the western end of the South Downs is the county town of Hampshire and dates back more than 2 millennia to a Celtic hill fort. The city prospered as both Roman and Saxon settlements and was capital of all England south of the Danelaw until 1066. Today it survives as a beautiful and peaceful city that is highly regarded for its architecture.
