York remains one of the great attractions of the North due to its historic importance throughout the ages since it was one of the capitals of Roman Britain and for two years the entire Roman Empire was governed from here. With its position at the confluence of the rivers Ouse and Foss and walled city it was also to be capital under the Vikings and capital of the North after the War of the Roses. Despite political prominence moving away after the 1660s it is still one of the ecclesiastical provinces alongside Canterbury and remains the proud county town of Yorkshire.
