Yorkshire is particularly famed for its historic county city of York and its two national parks of the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors; but it has many other historic towns, small cities and towns to offer such as Ripon, Harrogate, Leeds, Scarborough, Wakefield, Skipton and Otley. Yorkshire is the largest county in England and is also one of the most scenic, varied and interesting, often being described as "God's own county" - a claim that was certainly disputed in the War of the Roses against the long term rivals from Lancashire. There are now many popular resorts on the coast whilst the industrial success of the area can be seen by the historic architecture that dots the landscape.

During the Norman-Breton period after the Harrying of the North there many castles built such as York Castle, Richmond Castle, Pickering Castle, Bowes Castle and others. Later castles were built as a means of defence against the invading Scots, such as Helmsley Castle, Scarborough Castle and Middleham Castle. There are also many stately and historic homes throughout the county demonstrating the success of its entrepreneurs throughout the ages. There many museums and galleries in the historic towns and charming villages in the National Parks.
