The Yorkshire Dales area lies mainly within the county boundaries of Yorkshire and most of the area falls within the Yorkshire Dales District National Park, created in 1954. The Dales is a collection of river valleys and the hills in between them, rising from the Vale of York westwards to the hilltops of the main Pennine watershed. Most of the valleys drain eastwards to the Vale of York-into the Ouse and then the Humber. The dales are typically green with dry stonewalls and almost all are named after the river that runs through them with Wensleydale being the exception.

Historic places to visit in the Yorkshire Dales

The dales are not just famous for their rolling scenery but also for the large amounts of impressive waterfalls, caves and the distinctive Dales architecture. More than that there are many museums and other attractions to visit including Castle's and ruined Abbeys. There are museums to the history of the Dales and the part that railways have played, with the Carlisle Settle railway being a favoured way to take in the Dales.

Yorkshire Dales historic bed and breakfasts (B&Bs) and hotel accommodation in the Yorkshire Dales

The more historic hotels and bed and breakfast accommodation tends to be towards the centre of the older towns. There are many hotels, pubs and B&Bs in the smaller towns and villages throughout the park.
