Bayard's Cove Fort: Bayard's Cove Fort

Bayard's Cove Fort (Devon)

Summary

  • 16th century buildings

Introduction

Small Tudor artillery fort guarding Dartmouth's inner harbour, picturesquely sited on the quayside.

History to the present day

Bayard's Cover Fort is a small early Tudor artillery fort, built to defend the harbour entrance at Dartmouth, Devon.

The tower acted as a third layer of defence for the port against enemy ships. Bayard's Cove was situated to provide additional fire cover to protect the port should any enemy vessels break through the defensive cover of both Dartmouth Castle and Kingswear Castle which lay at the entrance of the cove.

Today, the site sits at the end of the pier as an attractive open shell.
