Introduction
The Bear Hotel is one of England’s oldest coaching inns and has been the focus of hospitality since 1464 in the quintessentially English market town of Hungerford, in the Royal County of Berkshire.
With thirty-nine individually designed bedrooms with Wi fi and flat screen TVs, award-winning restaurant and bar, conference and wedding facilities with private entrance, and gardens set on the banks of the River Dunn, The Bear even boasts its own small island.
Just over one hour by direct train from London, it is ideally situated be it for short breaks, visiting friends or relatives or indeed on business.
A Dog friendly Hotel, all Dogs welcome with well behaved owners!
History to the present day
The Bear at Hungerford dates back to the 13th Century. Henry VIII gave the hostelry to Queen Anne of Cleves and in 1541/2 to Queen Katherine Parr who survived him.
During the Civil Wars in 1644 Charles I made The Bear his Headquarters.
The two famous diarists of the 17th Century, John Evelyn and Samuel Pepys, both stayed at The Bear.
From 6th to 8th December 1688, William, Prince of Orange, later King William III, stayed at The Bear shortly before James Stuart fled to France and William and Mary jointly ascended the throne.
