Introduction

This 18th Century Georgian Town House is believed to have been built as a Dower House for a local wealthy family. Now, fully restored and adapted for use as a small hotel, Bishopsgate House provides an ideal opportunity for visitors to relax, enjoying delicious freshly prepared food, elegant rooms and friendly hospitality.

Centrally located in the historic castle town of Beaumaris, the hotel provides an ideal base from which to explore the many delights of Anglesey and Snowdonia.

History to the present day

Bishopsgate House was built around 1755, just outside the town wall, close to the main entrance into the town, called the Watergate. This substantial town house was built for the wealthy family of William Lewis, whose country estate was Plas Llanddyfnan, two miles north east of the town Llangefni. Beaumaris, being the county town at this time, provided the local social amenities, so it is more than probable that the Lewis family used the house as a town base when attending the exclusive balls and assemblies held here.

The hotel also boasts a mid 18th Century Chinese Chippendale staircase that features in the Welsh book of Antiquities along with the panelling in the residents' lounge and one of the bedrooms.

Food and Drinks

In the Rosette Awarded restaurant all meals are freshly prepared using the best local produce wherever possible. Two menus provide a wide choice, including fresh local fish, succulent Salt Marsh Lamb and Rose beef from Lleyn Peninsular. A number of local people who regularly use the restaurant bear witness to the quality and value for money provided.

Dinner is served 7.00pm - 9.30pm every day. Sunday Lunch is served 12.30pm - 2.30pm. Fully licensed bar service is also available.

Other facilities

The residents' lounge, which retains its original wall panelling, provides a relaxing atmosphere in which to enjoy coffee and liqueurs and, perhaps a chat with other guests at the end of your day. Pets are welcome, but a small supplement is charged if dogs are staying in the room. Please request this in the Additional Information section of the booking form.

A wide range of both indoor and outdor activities can be catered for in and around the town, including fishing, sailing, riding and golf, while the island's coastal paths and the nearby Snowdonia range establish the area as a walker's paradise. Beaumaris also boasts King Edward I's castle, whilst the Courthouse and Gaol add to the historical interest.

, January 2011: The room I had was I understand one of the smallest in the hotel. That said it was clean, well decorated and had all that I needed for my stay. The public rooms were well furnished and comfortable. The wow factor for me was the quality of customer service. It was warm and friendly and nothing seemed too much trouble. The fact I've booked a room with them next week is surely the best recommendation.
