Introduction
The Black Swan at Helmsley is a historic inn, turned boutique hotel. Its varied exterior, with its black and white timbered, Elizabethan and Georgian elements, portrays a rich history dating back to the 15th century. Right in the heart of one of the North Yorks Moors’ prettiest villages, the hotel is smartly appointed, blending antiques with classic contemporary design.
Guests come here to walk in the North York Moors National Park, enjoy Helmsley’s many shops and galleries, visit great landmarks like York Minster, Castle Howard and Rievaulx Abbey, and explore Whitby and the coast.
Children aged up to 4 years are welcome on a complimentary basis when sleeping in a cot bed. There is a charge of £25.00 that includes the extra bed and bedding, full English breakfast, bathrobes and children's toiletries, and applies to children up to the age of 16 years old when sharing a Superior Ensuite bedroom with you.
History to the present day
The hotel comprises three houses; the black and white house on the left of the terrace, the Georgian house in the middle, and the Elizabethan building on the right, which stands on the site where an inn is believed to have been situated for many centuries. It was in fact always destined to become Helmsley’s principal coaching inn when in 1838 it was decided to run a stage coach route linking Leeds and York with Helmsley. Known as The Helmsley Highflyer, the coach called three times a week at the hotel.
The addition of the houses has led to the preservation of the historically important areas of the building and has also done much to enhance its overall character.
Food and Drinks
Breakfast is served in the Rutland Restaurant from 8.00am - 9.45am Monday to Friday and from 8.00am - 10.00am on a Saturday and Sunday.
The acclaimed 2 AA rosette Rutland Restaurant, which was recently refurbished, offers three distinct menus for dinner, all of which use ingredients sourced from within 30 miles of the hotel wherever possible and change regularly to utilise the best seasonal produce. It is open from 7pm - 9.30pm, Sunday lunch is served from 12.30pm - 2.30pm.
The Brasserie opens from 6.30pm - 9.30pm, offering a more informal, relaxed dining experience. The bar is open daily from 11.00am - 11.00pm.
The Tearoom Menu is available for guests wishing to dine in the more informal surroundings of the bar and lounge area from 10.00am - 5.30pm. For something a little lighter, but no less indulgent, the hotel has its own tearoom, serving a wide selection of teas from around the world, as well as handmade artisan pastries, lunches and daily specials.
The tearoom was recently awarded entry into the prestigious Tea Guild, where it now sits alongside other world-famous hotels including The Ritz and The Dorchester, and in April 2010 was awarded the Tea Guild’s Top Tea Place 2010.
Grounds and gardens

These tranquil gardens are the ideal place to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life to relax and enjoy the finer things in life – a glass of wine or maybe afternoon tea? The gardens retain a country cottage feel to them and are well maintained. Lunch and Afternoon Tea is served in the gardens throughout the year, weather depending. The Black Swan is the only place in Helmsley to offer an outdoor dining experience in their gardens.
