Blakeney Guildhall (Norfolk)
Introduction
The remains of the house of a prosperous Blakeney merchant, with a fine 15th-century brickvaulted undercroft. Later the guildhall of Blakeney's guild of fish merchants.
History to the present day
The 15th century remains of a merchant house. The Guildhall features a very fine vaulted undercroft, constructed of brick on stone foundations. The building was later used by the Blakeney guild of fish merchants, hence the name.
The Guildhall was built in the late 14th or early 15th century. Only partial remains of that early building still stand. The undercroft is the best surviving feature. This consists of four bays on either side of a central row of supporting columns supporting the ribbed vaults. The undercroft is topped by the partial ruins of the upper story. Remains of a garderobe chute are built into the south wall.
