Bramham Park, Bramham (Leeds)
Introduction
Bramham Park is a splendid Queen Anne mansion, containing fine collections of furniture, porcelain and paintings and is set in the peaceful tranquillity of 66 acres of formal grounds and 100 acres of pleasure grounds. Entrance to the house is by arranged appointment only.
History to the present day
Bramham Park was built in 1698 by Robert Benson, the 1st Lord Bingley. It was Lord Bingley who was responsible for laying out the extensive landscape gardens around the house which make a visit to Bramham such a delight. The gardens epitomise the transition between the formality of 17th century European gardens such as Versailles, and the informality of later English landscape gardens. The house was built by an unknown architect in the style of a 16th century Florentine villa.
Food and Drinks
There are no refreshment facilities on site. Visitors are welcome to picnic in the grounds.
Grounds and gardens
The gardens are unique in the British Isles for their 'grand vista' design inspired by Andre le Notre, who created Versailles. They remain as they were originally laid out, over 250 years ago, with ornamental ponds, cascades, tall beech hedges and loggias of various shapes. The gardens have magnificent displays of spring flowers and roses. Dogs may be walked in the grounds and gardens, but must be kept on a lead. Three long vistas stretch into the pleasure grounds of Black Fen, wherein the more natural and wilder habitat nature trails have been established amongst the magnificent Cedar, Copper Beech and Spanish Chestnut rides radiating from temples and an Obelisk.
Other facilities
Dogs may be walked in the grounds and gardens, but must be kept on a lead.
