Introduction
Set against the backdrop of the majestic Dartmoor National Park in the ancient market town of Tavistock, this 17th Century Coaching Inn has recently been refashioned into a stylish town house hotel, brasserie and wine bar where pure English elegance mixes easily with the feel of a friendly country house.
Surrounded by the splendour of Devon’s fascinating landscape, Browns Hotel is superbly located in the centre of this historic town alongside a wealth of individual shops and the thriving pannier market offering stalls full of antiques and crafts, elegant foods, flowers and much more.
Browns is a chic boutique Town & Country Hotel. Lovingly restored, it has the utmost charm with comfortable armchairs and exposed brickwork. You will find an enchanting blend of the conventional and traditional throughout the property, and be charmed on arrival by the welcoming staff and warm atmosphere that is optimised by Brown’s.
History to the present day
Formerly a 17th Century coaching inn, this is the oldest licensed premises in Tavistock and was rebuilt by the seventh Duke of Bedford on the site of an earlier hostelry. Recently totally refurbished with loving care, Browns is full of charm and is the perfect base for exploring and touring the beautiful countryside and pretty villages of Devon and Cornwall.
The courtyard is an ideal setting for relaxing in the sun, with a meal from our superb lunch menu, or while away the hours in our airy conservatory near the fresh water well around which the original coaching inn was built. This Roman well was uncovered during the major refurbishment of Browns Hotel in 2000AD. It was a holy well for the Benedictine Abbey of Tavistock which was founded by Ordgar, Earl of Devon. Mention is made of the well when owned by John Ffytz in 1597.
Filtered spring water from the well is served both still and carbonated at Browns. Over a thousand years ago travellers and monks from the nearby abbey enjoyed refreshment from this well and today its water is provided in bottles. Today Browns Hotel spring water is bottled and sold all over the Great Britain.
