You will be warmly welcomed at California Farm with tea and home-made cakes on arrival.
History to the present day
There has been a farm on the property for over 350 years although in 1850 it was known as "Hill Farm". Its name was changed to California Farm after the poppy that grows abundantly on the land. The farmhouse and barn have been built using Cotswold stone from its own quarry. The house stands in 14 acres of pasture and originally comprised 3 farm workers cottages and a separate barn which were owned for three generations by the Davis family who used it as a dairy farm. For the past 22 years the current owners have meticulously restored the whole property to a very high standard maintaining as many of the original beams and fire places as they could.
Food and Drinks
Breakfast at California Farm is a real treat; in addition to cereals, fresh fruit juices, fresh and dried fruits, yoghurt and croissants, guests have a choice of porridge or a traditional full English breakfast.
The dining area is elegant without being austere and overlooks the garden and surrounding countryside. The evening menu changes with the seasons and is served in the beamed dining room with a view of the roaring log burner in the winter months which gives it a warm and cosy feel. In the summer the doors and windows are thrown open and the dining room is filled with a welcoming cool evening breeze. Traditional home cooked food including roasts and Gloucester Old Spot Sausages and mash are served. Please let Lynne know when you book if you have any special dietary needs as she is happy to accommodate a variety of requirements.
A popular restaurant is within a 15 minute country walk and boasts a celebrity chef, Martin Blunos.
Grounds and gardens
California Farm is fortunate to be situated in the most idyllic surroundings with wonderful grounds and gardens for guests to relax in. The Costwold hills surround it and from the bedrooms you can enjoy panoramic views over the Gloucestershire countryside as far as the eye can see. Completely secluded, yet within easy reach of all amenities and activities.
There is a large, lawned garden with beautiful trees and shrubs, outside dining area and a pond. To the rear of the property are the stables. The long private drive leads to an ample parking area at the front of the property.
