Introduction
One of the largest, best preserved and most lavishly decorated keeps in England, surrounded by 20 acres of mighty earthworks. Begun in 1138 by William d'Albini for his new wife, the widow of Henry I, in the 14th century it became the luxurious exile-place of Queen Isabella, widow (and alleged murderess) of Edward II. Owned and managed by Lord Howard of Rising.
History to the present day
The construction of Castle Rising was commenced around 1140 by Henry Albini as a celebration of his marriage. Situated five miles north of Kings Lynn the Keep of Castle rising is remarkable for its good state of repair and the fact that much of the impressively ornate Norman architecture remains intact. The keep is surrounded by thirteen acres of impressive earthworks which were once topped by curtain walls. The walls have long since vanished, save for some fragmented sections however the Keep has survived with its walls still standing to full height.
The castle is best known for its role as the last home of Queen Isabella, the wayward wife of Edward II. A few years after she murdered her husband at Berkeley Castle, Isabella was tried and punished by banishment to Castle Rising, where she lived for the remaining thirty years of her life.
