Impressively well preserved stretch of Hadrians' Wall

Summary
- 13th century buildings (or older)

Introduction
A fine stretch of Hadrian's Wall on a steep slope, with turrets and an impressive milecastle, probably built by the Second Legion.
History to the present day
Cawfields stretches across a steeply sloped site and terminates abruptly in high cliffs, where the land has been cut away by quarrying. It is one of the best preserved and most scenic stretches of Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland. This part of the Wall also includes a large milecastle which is easily accessible on foot.
Milecastle 42 is though to have been built by the 2nd Legion and covers an area of 17.8 metres by 14.4 metres. The walls of the milecastle survive to a height of 1.4 metes in places, and it is one of the most complete milecastles on the Wall. A dedication slab and tombstone were found when the site was excavated.
One of the best preserved and easiest to access parts of Hadrian's Wall, Cawfields also has excellent views from the steep slopes of the site.
