Introduction
Clifford's Tower is the surviving keep of York's main medieval castle. It stands on the earth mound created by William the Conqueror in 1069 to control the second most important city in England. A second castle was located on the opposite bank of the river Ouse. At first the mound was topped by a timber tower, but this was burned down when York's small Jewish community tragically met its death here in 1190. In its place Henry III build the present stone 'four leaf' tower in 1245.
Climb to the top of Clifford's Tower for sweeping views across the city and surrounding Yorkshire countryside.
History to the present day
The sweeping panoramic views of historic York and the surrounding countryside make it clear to see how Clifford's Tower has played such a crucial role in York's history. Perched high on its mount, the once central stronghold of York Castle, has survived turbulent centuries of fire, siege and attempted demolition.
Walk inside and outsite the tower walls and find out more about the role Clifford's played in the history of England, with its violent origins in William the Conqueror's northern campaign of terror. The Tower has had many varied roles throughout history, from a royal mint to a prison; as a place of exhibition for the bodies of leaders of uprisings and even as a criminal court.
