History to the present day
Craigend Cottage originally formed part of the much larger Westoun Estate, which was owned by the Greenshields family. The cottage was originally built in around 1730 to house the Farm Manager and his family and continued to be occupied by estate employees up until the 1970's. Following the sale of the estate, the cottage fell into disrepair and was rebuilt and extended in 2004. The original stone work was retained for the western end of the cottage and the stone dykes still encompass the garden and fields.
Westoun House and its surrounding buildings were purchased in the last few years and are in the process of being rebuilt or refurbished (March 2011). The family burial ground is located a few hundred yards from Craigend Cottage and is regularly visited by Greenshields from all over the world.
A 20 minute walk away you will reach one of the many Wallace Caves in Scotland. Reputed to be one of Wallaces hiding places, this cave is thought to have been most likely to have been used as it just a short distance from Lanark where Wallace first fought with the English.
Food and Drinks
Breakfast is an informal affair with guests eating together around a large table. All produce is locally sourced with eggs coming from the resident chickens. A traditional full Scottish/English breakfast is available with cereals, preserves and fruit also on offer. Special diets can be catered for with advanced notice.
Grounds and gardens
With grounds of an acre and a half and originally used as a nursery field, the owners have started a life long project of transforming farm land to gardens. A 40 metre pond sits in the middle of the garden and is overlooked by an outdoor area of decking for guests to enjoy. An array of birds visit the garden and a sighting of a Great Spotted Woodpecker at breakfast is virtually guaranteed. Sparrow Hawks, Barn Owls, Hen Harriers and Buzzards can all be seen within the miles of open countryside which guests are free to roam.
Other facilities
Off road parking, drying room, lockable garage for bikes or classic cars and wellies for loan.
