Introduction
Eagle House is a fine Georgian Mansion with 8 letting bedrooms. The house is set in 2 acres of landscaped gardens in the tranquil Conservation village of Bathford just 3 miles from the city of Bath.
Rooms are with their own private facilities (both bath & shower) and those on the garden side of the house have far reaching views down the valley. The rooms on the other side of the house overlook garden as well and have pleasant views of the village. All rooms are calm, quiet and are equipped with queen sized double beds, direct dial telephones, free wi-fi broadband internet access, tea /coffee making facilities (with fresh milk!) and are furnished with a mixture of antique and more modern furniture. Single, twin and family rooms are available upon request. Please note single rooms are equipped with a shower rather than both bath and shower.
The owners, John and Rosamund Napier, bought Eagle House in 1983 and started the guesthouse in 1984. This year they celebrated 25 sucessful years of welcoming guests to their elegant yet informal house and home.
There is a 2 Night Minimum Stay at weekends, please enter the promotional code, FRI/SAT or SAT/SUN and there is a 3 night stay on Bank Holidays using the code BANKHOLIDAY.
History to the present day
Eagle House is a Grade 2 Listed Building designed by John Wood The Elder in 1752 some 2 years only before he died. John Wood's most important work in the city itself includes Queen Square, the Circus and Prior Park Mansion built as the first "show home" to demonstrate the beauty and virtues of Bath's oolitic limestone. Eagle House was built for James Ferry, a London Silk Mercer, who moved to Bathford from London in the early 1750s to open 2 silk shops in Bath.
When the Georgian house was constructed in 1752 it was in fact built on top of and surrounding an earlier dwelling, which was an Elizabethan malthouse dating from the early 1600s. This has resulted in a number of intriguing changes of level within the house.
Eagle House was run by the nuns of St Joseph's Convent and subsequently as a school (Eagle House School) for boys up until the end of 1982.
Food and Drinks
Eagle House offers an excellent breakfast, which is included in the room rate but no lunch or dinner. The local pub, The Crown, which is 5 minutes or so by foot, serves both lunch and dinner 7 days a week and has a reputation for friendly staff and generous helpings! In addition to the Crown there are several good local pubs and restaurants within 5 or 10 minutes drive.
Eagle House does not have a licence for alcohol but glasses and ice are freely available for those who are happy to bring their own refreshment. Guests are welcome to consume their drinks in their bedrooms, the Drawing Room or indeed out on the terrace and in the garden in warmer weather.
Grounds and gardens
Guests are welcome to enjoy the garden and grounds and there are numerous places to sit and relax. On the terrace there are chairs and tables - ideal for a lunchtime or evening picnic and the staff are always happy to enable guests to do this.
In the summer months the grass tennis court is in action and racquets and balls are available to borrow. On the upper lawn there's space for croquet to be set out.
For families there is a tree house underneath the cedar, a trampoline and an exciting Tarzan-style rope swing under the Beech tree.
In addition, guests are welcome to excercise their dogs (on a lead) in the grounds but we do ask that they be considerate in all ways to other guests who may or may not be dog-friendly.
Other facilities
The car park, which is free to guests, has space for 10 vehicles and is both safe and out of sight of the road.
The bus service - No 13 or 13b - runs from approx 7.00 am to 11.00 pm every 15 minutes on week-days and only a little less regularly at week-ends, although on Sunday buses do start later and finish earlier.
Although at Eagle House we are not able to offer laundry facilites there is, on the way into Bath (on the London Road by the Kwik Fit Garage), an excellent "Wash & Fold", which will deliver laundry back to Eagle House for a modest charge.
Ironing facilities are freely available to guests and there's a drying room in the basement.
