Full of character with its charming Tudor style exterior and traditional interior decor, The Edgwarebury Corus Hotel stands within landscaped gardens, surrounded by 10 acres of natural woodland.

History to the present day

The first recorded occupant of Edgwarebury House was Commander Sir Tim Dawson BT, of the Royal Navy in 1540 AD. It remained a private residence for many generations of the Dawson family.

In the early 1930s it was turned into a private country club and remained so until the late 1960s. It was operated as a small family run hotel with a fine restaurant for some years until the recent expansion in 1989.

The building's original features have been retained and added to. The front door for example was originally part of the dungeons in Lewis Castle. The entrance hall is dominated by the original fireplace, this outstanding feature with Italian carved columns supporting the ornate mantelpiece immediately draws the eye and creates a unique setting for events & parties.

The decorative frieze paintings around the upper part of the lobby were executed by Sir Norman Little. They depict scenes from the Spanish Armada. It is understood that some of the wood in the lobby panelling is actually recovered timber from Spanish ships involved in this battle. Another feature is the wooden panel in the Beaufort room, which is believed to date back to the 1600s. In the bar there is a particularly fine set of old gothic panels made from ships lockers. The frieze over the mantelpiece features some fine carving, which frames a medieval Spanish painting, produced on leather canvas.
